The American Catholic

A lot of us are baffled by the Catholic politicians in the U.S. who thumb their nose at Church teachings. I even hear that young Catholics have no problem with same sex relationships/marriage(according to some polls). From time to time Nancy Pelosi gets on tv,does an interview and makes a statement that she knows Catholic teaching and history. She's not the spokesperson for the Catholic Church(maybe in her own mind)the Pope is for one.For another her facts were incredibly wrong.

So you have to ask yourself. Do they really believe you can BE Catholic and not submit to the teaching authority of the Church? Do they know not to do so is heresy? Have they read the Catechism of the Catholic Church and know how serious some issues are? Things like abortion, euthanasia and same sex are considered INTRINSICALLY evil? Do they know what that means?

Do they know the responsibility they have because they are in positions of power and can affect these issues DIRECTLY? How did young Catholics even come to believe they could disregard Church teaching on matters of faith and morals?

Has our current culture so affected people that given a choice between heaven and hell they would choose hell? Have we forgotten SIN or formation of conscience? Do we know that the Church teaches that we have obligation to follow our conscience but that means an informed conscience and definitely NOT a dead one?

Are we,as Catholics, not prepared to affect our culture for the good? Do we take into consideration the consequences for our society by not living our Catholic faith? We vote for these pro abortion candidates time and time again. We helped elect a man who has no compunction about attacking the Catholic Church. Think about that. He's shown a great antipathy for the Catholic faith and yet Catholics vote for him?

We took up the words "tell the Church to stay out my bedroom "(not that they were there)but the rate of divorce for Catholics now matches the rate of divorce for the secular culture.

Maybe the Church has it right? Did we bother to know what the Church actually teaches and WHY? Jesus promised the gates of hell would not prevail over His Church and He has kept that promise-and will. Jesus never said, the gates of hell would not prevail over the Catholic Church in America. That should give us pause for thought.

There was a time in our American history that Catholics were not permitted to practice their faith(thank God for the Quakers in Pennsylvania). I bet those people did not take their Catholic faith for granted and knew what it meant to them.

There was a time in Poland when a young Karol Woltya could have been shot for being a Catholic priest. There was a time in Nazi Poland when all semblance of Catholic culture was stripped from its Catholic institutions. Icons, statues and other Catholic symbols were removed. Then Communism took over and made its attempt to squash the faith of Polish Catholics. They KNEW what they had because they risked life and limb for it.

We take it all for granted and now we reject the parts that we think restrict our lives. We have no idea what true freedom is. This should be a warning to all Catholics. Actually even to non Catholics. Georgetown University covered over the monogram “IHS”--symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

The “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up--when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com. - See more at:http://cnsnews.com/news/article/georgetown-says-it-covered-over-name-jesus-comply-white-house-request-0#sthash.TbGWAZHd.dpuf To think Notre Dame University actually let this man speak at their commencement ceremonies. The same President who distanced himself from the National Day of Prayer by nixing a formal early morning service and not attending a large Catholic prayer breakfast the next morning.

Sorry, that's backwards. I think the people that elected him and other anti Catholic politicians will rue the day. It's not just politics though. As Catholics we have to take a stand against today's culture. It matters. If it's because Catholics just don't know-then the call for the New Evangelization is imperative.
